Buy a Portable Classroom the Smart Way

Tips for buying a Portable Classroom

I enjoy helping public and private schools across the nation make smart decisions and save money renting or buying portable classrooms - that's why this web site and blog exists. So whenever I get a new phone call or email with a question about using a portable I usually write a post and share my advice with as many readers as possible.

My latest call came from a private school owner who was trying to find a portable classroom big enough to accommodate two classrooms each for twenty students. During the call we discovered some cost saving ideas - here are the questions, answers and my comments from the conversation:

Q: Do you need all of this classroom space under one roof or can you utilize two portables?
A: Actually, we prefer under one roof but the area we have to install the portable is an odd shape.
COMMENTS: Sometimes using two smaller portables makes more sense particularly if the amount of space available for installation is not compatible with the outline of the portable. For example an "L" shaped lot compared to a perfectly square lot would require two units with a connecting ramp and deck.

3 Reasons to Get 3 Prices for a Portable Building

Prices for portable building. Save dollars by knowing multiple price quotes for potable building
Portable Building Prices

Get Portable Building Prices from varied suppliers

Portable modular building prices vary from supplier to supplier in the United States and many factors come into play when a price to rent or buy has been requested by a potential customer like you. Unfortunately it is very common for someone shopping for a portable to get only one price before a decision is made - this is a huge mistake if saving money is an important goal for your business.

Here are my top 3 reasons for spending some time and shopping for at least 3 price quotes from your local portable building suppliers:

1. Competition is healthy! Suppliers are familiar with competing to win an order so let them do so. Find at least three local suppliers and send your request to each of them. Be clear that you are shopping and comparing for portable building prices and watch the competition begin. You can send your portable building price request to local suppliers by clicking here.

"Our job is to connect people looking for temporary office or classroom space with local suppliers that want to compete for the business. We have thousands of users each month and many of them are based throughout Florida," stated Matt Banes who founded iModular.com in 1998.

Modular Building Help - Handicap Ramps

Handicap Ramp for your Modular Building

Here's a quick tip for anyone planning to use a modular building as a classroom or office. Always check with your local planning department about access for handicap individuals. In most cases you will need a handicap ramp to access the main entrance.

Modular building suppliers can provide you with a price to rent or buy a handicap ramp that meets ADA specifications and fits your modular building and site conditions. The length of the ramp is determined by the height of the bottom of the main entrance door so setting your modular building as low to the ground as possible may save you money and space.

If you have questions ask your local modular building supplier or check with Matt Banes at iModular.com.

Tip #2 - How to buy or rent a used modular building

Second tip for buying a used modular building

In Tip #1 we covered the important step of looking into the local building and permitting laws for using a modular building in your city. If you didn't read this modular building tip you can read it here.

Tip #2 - Site selection.
After you have discovered city and state guidelines for locating a modular structure on your property or on property you are searching for you should start the planning stage. Here are some steps to follow next:

1. Find a location on your property that has easy access for a large truck and plenty of space for the amount of space you need.

2. If you are going to buy or rent property explain your requirements to your real estate agent and be clear about using a modular building as your type of building.

3. Locate all utilities and meet with an electrician, a plumber (if needed) and a used modular building set up contractor (you can find one by calling a local modular building supplier) to review the site and obtain accurate prices for all utility and installation costs. Note - if you are going to develop a site for long term or permanent use learn everything about the property you can including prior use, soil conditions, adjoining properties and future development plans in the area.

4. Once you have selected the property or identified where the modular will be placed on your property it’s time to move to Tip #3, contacting and choosing the right supplier.

How to buy a used modular building - Tip #1

Things to know before buying a used modular building

Buying or renting a used modular building takes time and research if you want the best value for your money. Here is the first of many up to date tips about finding and buying or leasing/renting a prefabricated modular office, classroom, church building or other commercial structure.

Tip #1 - Know your local building and permitting codes.

Yes, this is very important if you are going to use a temporary or permanent modular structure on your property for human occupants. Your local building and safety and planning departments will have the facts for you so contact them before spending too much time trying to find a modular building first.

In most cases your local authority will quickly tell you what you can and cannot do with a rented or purchased modular building. You will learn about where you can place a modular on your property, for how long, how it can be used and what type of access for people will be required. Issues such as life safety, fire codes and handicap access will all be covered for your benefit.

Once you have a god understanding of the laws governing portable/modular building codes in your city you can then begin the process of planning....that will be covered in Tip #2 on this blog.
